Terry Downes was a popular and courageous British boxing champion, a tough and combative middleweight who won the world middleweight title in 1961 by stopping Paul Pender in nine rounds at Wembley, becoming one of only a handful of British fighters to win the world middleweight crown in the modern era. Known for his aggressive, crowd-pleasing style and London wit, Downes fought some of the leading middleweights of his era and had two memorable bouts with the great Sugar Ray Robinson. He was the British and Empire middleweight champion multiple times and is remembered as one of the most entertaining British fighters of the 1960s.
